History of the Athletics Association of Guyana

The British Guiana Amateur Athletic Association and Cyclist Unionwas created in July 1947 by a group of dports loving persons, which included the late Barry Massey. It seems to the governing body for a number of sports discipline as the original Constitution stated, "to affiliate such sports as Athletics, Boxing, Cycling, Volleyball, Rounders, Swimming..."

An examination of the formation of National Atheltics Federations throughout the Caribbean shows that most of them started around this period and the theory is that Great Britain hosting which was the 1984 Olympic Games, wanted to see the attendance of all of her Colonies.

The 1947 Costitution was changed in 1983 long after many of the disciplines, which were supposed to be part of its structure, had become National Federations of their own.

The Association is affiliated to:
  • The International Association of Athletics Federation
  • The Central American & Caribbean Athletic Confederation
  • The South American Athletic Confederation
  • The Guyana Olympic Association

These affiliations allow the Associationto participate in Congresses and Competitions of the respective bodies such as the IAAF World Athlectic Championships, the CAC Championships/Games, the South American Championships / Games, the Pan American Games and the Olympic Games.

As the National governing body for athlectics in Guyan it is responsible for organing/ sanctioning Track and Field, Cross Country, Road Running and Walking competitions to select athletes to attend Championships/Games overseas.

The Association is administered by a Council, which meets on a monthly. It is assisted in its work by a number of Sub Committees. However, the Annual General Meeting(AGM) is the supreme body and elects members of the Council every four (4) years.
